Out in the communities Narú workers often find cases of such severe malnutrition that the child’s life is in immediate danger - particularly if it has developed a co-morbidity such as pneumonia.
For these children we arrange transport to hospital plus support during their stay. Later they enter the Narú programme to prevent a relapse. Thousands of children, however, have been helped to gain a healthy weight for their age while staying at home. There the mother can continue to care for all her family while learning new skills to protect their health.
In all malnutrition cases, the aim is sustained recovery through training and therapy with a readily-available supplement that can support the family’s nutrition long after they have left the programme.
